LAXART PRESENTS A NEW SCULPTURAL INSTALLATION BY LOS ANGELES-BASED ARTIST KORI NEWKIRK AND THE DEBUT OF MIGUEL ANGEL RIOS' VIDEO ENTITLED CRUDO
July 19 - September 6, 2008 (closed for summer, August 24 - September 1)
Opening reception July 19, 7-9pm
July 19, 6pm
Walk-through with artist Miguel Angel Rios and guest curator Gilbert Vicario
LAXART is pleased to present a new sculptural installation entitled RANK by Los Angeles-based artist Kori Newkirk. Centered upon a highly polished mirrored podium exaggerated to architectural scale, RANK mimics the visual logic and cultural pervasiveness of a recent and forthcoming political theater. By restaging this trope of public speech at a time in which the nation awaits the upcoming presidential election, Newkirk heightens the charge and urgency surrounding this ubiquitous form. Otherwise rendered inconspicuous as a medial device, the functionality of the podium is herein transformed by a manipulation of scale and the application of a mirrored surface to give way to both formal abstraction and pure spectacle. Conjuring both ideology and the body, RANK offers an unspecific monument in which meaning and content are delivered through tensions of presence and absence. It is in this context that Newkirk's intervention animates the theatricality of minimalist sculpture, implicating viewers through devices of reflection, while also interrogating the role audiences play in the rituals of political discourse.

From Radiohead:
In Radiohead's new video for "House of Cards", no cameras or lights were used. Instead, 3D plotting technologies collected information about the shapes and relative distances of objects. The video was created entirely with visualizations of that data.

Man, how did I miss this?! Boy pals Todd St. John from Hunter Gatherer and Slabco Steve collaborated to create this Webby winner (Best Use of Animation/Motion Graphics) and Emmy nominated video "Circle Squared". Todd created all the awesome stop-motion animation, concept, and everything and Steven provided the music for a commission by T: The New York Times Style Magazine for last winter's holiday season. According to Todd, the video is about "One creature consumes another so that it may be satisfied and continue its existence, only to give its life to be the next animal's meal."
Enjoy! Better late than never!

We spent a beautiful afternoon at adidas' third annual Adicup, a soccer tournament for the lifestylist community. Sure there were a lot of short shorts and high tube socks worn by non players, but nobody was complaining. The day was filled with lots of sun (I mean lots) and fun. Friends and family from all over the LA metro area came to cheer on their favorite team made up of magazines, fashion brands, radio stations, and other cool posses. Organic fare was provided by the Green Truck and DJ King Britt had the crowd swaying if they weren't playing. A great way to kick off summer! More soccer please!

Ori hosted a bunch of us for a DreamWorks' campus lunch and tour. The complex is beautiful, complete with waterfalls, a pond with koi and duck and it gives off a vibe of a fairly relaxed environment. There were busy ping pong games and overly crowded lunch tables filled with really smiley people. My second visit was even more fun because I got to share it with others. DWA's pretty, pretty cool... it must be the free yogurt machine! Thanks again, Ori!
An impromptu tour of the group art show, "Ornithology" by gallerist and friend, Jen Bekman at her namesake gallery. The show's up until August 2nd so please swing by if you have a chance.

SYLVIA PLACHY
Talk and Book Signing
Sylvia Plachy was the first photographer assigned to shoot the opening photograph of the legendary Goings On About Town section of The New Yorker. Plachy will discuss key images in her latest Aperture book, Goings On About Town: Photographs for The New Yorker (co-published with The New Yorker, October 2007), which brings together a collection of these delightful and enchanting photographs for the first time. Plachy, who is well known to New Yorkers for her long-standing photo column at the Village Voice entitled “Unguided Tour,” explores the city’s dynamics from the inside out, revealing the vital and at times wacky creativity that energizes New York around the clock. The images are quintessentially Sylvia Plachy, and quintessentially New York. Plachy will also show and discuss other images from her illustrious 40-year career.
Sylvia Plachy’s (b.1943, Budapest) photographs have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the Village Voice, Granta, Artforum, Fortune, and have been exhibited in galleries and museums in Berlin, Paris, Budapest, and Tokyo. Plachy has received a 2004 Golden Light award for her critically acclaimed book of her personal history in central Europe, Self Portrait with Cows Going Home (Aperture, 2004). A retrospective of her work was featured at PhotoEspaña, Madrid, last spring.
